After releasing cheetahs into quarantine cages in Kuno National Park in Madhya Pradesh on Saturday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the nation and pleaded with people to be patient before viewing cheetahs.
Even though India proclaimed cheetahs extinct in 1952, PM Modi said, it is regrettable that no proactive steps were taken for many years to restore them.
On September 17, which is also Prime Minister Modi's 72nd birthday, eight cheetahs arrived in Gwalior from Namibia's capital Windhoek at 8 am.
Prime Minister described the cheetahs as "India's guests" and pledged that India will do its best to care for them in accordance with international standards. He expressed gratitude to the Namibian government for their support of the endeavor.
As part of India's Rs 90 crore Cheetah Introduction project, eight African cheetahs from Namibia—five females and three males between the ages of 4-6 years—have been transported 8,000 kilometers over the Indian Ocean to the Kuno National Park in Madhya Pradesh.
